1:48th scale conversions and accessory kits for the AFV Modeller

unpainted Vc Firefly using FF001 Sherman V conversion kit plus a Tamiya M4.

FF001 Sherman V M4A4 Conversion Set 1:48          £25.00

This kit includes a new resin hull top and bottom, track extensions, tow hook, exhausts, lifting eyes and several other components. The photo etched parts include track skids, mud guards and mounting ribs, brush guards, smoke grenade boxes, episcope guards, exhaust deflector, handles, grille and other smaller details.

Illustrated instructions are provided showing the locations of all the components, and detailing the modifications required for the Tamiya kit. You can also download a pdf file of these instructions by clicking here. For a Firefly variant use Tamiya kit MM32532, Firefly IC. For a standard Sherman V the Tamiya M4A1 kit has its pioneer tools moulded separately so we would recommend that kit instead of the M4, which has some of its tools moulded on the hull. The picture shows the Tamiya parts moulded in green plastic, while the Fighting 48th! parts are grey resin and brass.

The instructions also include a list of books, magazine articles and web links for further reading. For a detailed look at this kit, click on Missing Lynx review. Konrad Schreier has used one for his model of ADJUNCT, you can read this article on the www.track48.com site, or click on this link.

Parts included in the FF005 Sherman V Direct Vision conversion kit.

FF005 M4A4 Direct Vision Hull Conversion Set 1:48     £25.00

As with our kit FF001 this kit includes a new resin hull top and bottom, track extensions, tow hook, exhausts, lifting eyes and several other components, plus the photo etched parts mentioned above. The hulls differed particularly in the driver and co-drivers hatches, which on this earlier version have vision slits with articulated visors rather than the extended hoods and built-in episcopes. Both types saw extensive service and were used for the Firefly, Crab, ARV and DD conversions as well as gun tanks with the 75mm gun..

Illustrated instructions are provided showing the locations of all the components, and detailing the modifications required for the Tamiya kit. You can also download a pdf file of these instructions by clicking here. For a Firefly variant use Tamiya kit MM32532, Firefly IC, for a standard Sherman V use the Tamiya M4A1 kit as it has most of the pioneer tools moulded separately. The Tamiya welded hull M4 and Firefly 1c, have some of their tools moulded onto the hull. The picture shows the parts which include cast resin hull top and bottom, track extensions for the T48 rubber chevron track supplied with the Tamiya kits, and many smaller detail parts in both resin and etched brass.

Assembly is almost identical to the FF001 kit differing only with the visors, although several smaller differences are represented on the castings. Both hulls feature finely modelled weld seams and casting numbers, as well as all the features particular to the M4A4 version.

Partially assembled Crab Mk 1 made from the Fighting 48th! kits FF001 and FF006, plus a Tamiya M4 Sherman kit.

FF006 Sherman Crab Mk 1 Flail Mine Clearing Tank Conversion Set 1:48        £23.00

This kit provides parts for the flail, jib, chalk lane marking equipment and other items specific to the Crab variant. A full set of flail chains are provided as resin castings, including a few spare chains for the stowage rack. The jib can be assembled level or raised, and several different stowage arrangements are catered for with additional blanket boxes, stowage racks etc.

Photo etched parts are provided for many smaller components and the debris shield is preformed from etched brass to aid assembly. An alternative gun rotor shield (narrow, with two side pieces) is also included as some Crabs were fitted with this style. Fully illustrated instructions are included, with reference suggestions. You can download a pdf file of these instructions by clicking here.

This kit must be used in combination with one of our Fighting 48th! Sherman M4A4 kits (FF001 or FF005), plus a Tamiya M4 or M4A1 kit.

Please note that each kit is supplied with 1 set of hydraulic ram parts, and 1 set of light frames. Alteratives for these parts are being cast, and we will confirm your preference before dispatching your kits. Our picture also shows a model fitted with our T62 style tracks, kit FF007. These are not included in the Crab set, but available seperately if you require them for your model. Have a look at our Accessories page for more information.

We stock the British Sherman decal sheet from Bison Decals, which includes a set of markings for a Crab, as well as markings several other M4A4 tanks. You can find these in the Decals section.

Steven Zaloga's Crab Mk 1 before the paint was applied.

This picture shows Steven Zaloga’s US Army Crab build before the paint was applied. You can see the jib is raised, lifting the chains clear of the ground. Steven has used epoxy putty to add canvas covers to the gun muzzle and mantlet, and used one of our alternative track sets for the M3 and M4 series of tanks. More details of these and other detailing accessories can be found on the Accessories page.
